What Have You Been Asked About Single Mums Rights

It's become evident that in America, the one big thing that can undermine your financial success is not a handicap, drug addiction, or disability, but rather being a single mother. Single mothers could be put in this category through divorce, death, or by choice, but these are not the main reasons why an unwed mum loses earning power. The main reason for this is because of a basic bias and discrimination in American business that strips away single mums rights, and discriminates brazenly against them.

The majority of single mums who work long hours are too tired to notice this situation, but now this is starting to be a big element in the fight for single mums rights. The society in which we live stipulates that in order to become accomplished at our profession we must play the corporate game, get better jobs, demand better pay so that we can send our kids to college. However, this only works if you are married.

If you are a single mother, the interpretation is that you will be a business liability, and in a few states, it is fair to ask for the marital status of a job applicant, and find out if there are any minors. Employers claim this lets them refuse to hire single moms, and therefore avoid paying health care expenses for their children. Or, if they do happen to engage them, to deliberately pay them a lower rate to offset the perceived health care expenses. But, because it is allowable by law, this is not regarded as being discriminatory. Single mums rights groups throughout the country are denouncing the legality of this kind of practice.

Single mothers have been requested to get off welfare and go back to work, but recruiting centers are actually pitched against them. Lots of single moms work long hours to provide for their children, with barely any help from the government or errant fathers. Yet, they are employed at a lower rate of pay than other women, if they are hired at all. They have little support and must hire someone to care for the youngsters during their shift at work. If they get sick, their position can be acute, both in terms of money and child minding.

Some years ago, the government census figures indicated that over 10 million single mums live in the United States. Many of these single mums are grouping together in small groups to carry the fight for single mums rights. Child care centers, counseling and financial advice are some of the benefits these groups provide. A lot of single mums are petitioning their public officials to change the regulations that make it legal to ask for a mother's marital status or if she has children. Single mums groups are gaining momentum in every corner of the land, in their fight for single mums rights, so that every single mother, will find justice in the workplace.
