Teenage Alcohol Abuse, The Connection Between Abusive Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Training
Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics demonstrate the fact that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol dependency professionals claim that beer, wine, and liquor ads constructed by the media are a significant by the media are an important reason for the spread of teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcoholism professionals declare that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and accessibility of liquor, wine, and beer in our society. Still other alcohol dependency specialists articulate that numerous young people get involved in harmful drinking because of the increased tension that they undergo.
From a slightly different vantage point, because both parents in a number of families work, the lack of parental guidance obviously has to play a significant part in the escalation of youth alcohol abuse. And last of all, a variety of alcoholism authorities declare that the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse is due, at least partially, to our laissez-faire society.
One element of youth alcohol abuse that appears to be poorly reported in the alcohol addiction research results, then again, is the lack of educational programs that teach teens how to further develop their coping skills so that their hazardous and careless drinking behavior is drastically decreased or done away with. Stated more precisely, scientific research has demonstrated that there is an indirect correlation between poor coping skills and unhealthy and excessive drinking.
For all intents and purposes, this means that the more mediocre the coping skills, the higher the frequency of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a valid line of reasoning, why isn't coping skills training a key part of the educational core curriculum in all of our high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools?
Let us construct a scenario for explanatory purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all people are taught how to achieve sound coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including the twelfth grade. In such a society, when life gets stressful, individuals who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a healthier and more successful way, contrary to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into practice.
Stated differently, students who display superior coping skills will be more able to think logically and show signs of superior decision making as opposed to teenagers who, because they failed to obtain top quality coping skills, are attracted to the "quick fix" of alcohol abuse.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, moreover, if adolescents not only obtained extraordinary coping skills education but also got a top shelf education that stressed the long term and short term negative consequences associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Emphasizing these kinds of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills education, it is declared, would help teenagers stay away from the obvious allure of teenage drinking and, for that reason, would radically diminish the excessive drinking behavior shown by adolescents in our country.
There are evidently several valid reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in an injurious manner. Such a tricky predicament demands an all-inclusive and more pertinent response by our parents, students, politicians, and educators so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's difficulties in a more productive and responsible manner instead of gravitating to hazardous and abusive drinking to solve their problems.
