Common Water Heater Problems And Easy Fixes

Water heater problems are nothing to take lightly as they can cause quite a trouble, particularly if they occur with a bad timing. A lot of the concerns though can be set quite easily and some averted altogether. Unfortunately many water heaters sit in the basement or closet for years with no one taking notice of them and this inadequate maintenance and care brings about unnecessary problems in the future.

Most of the problems with water heaters can be tied back to one of two aspects. Those are age and insufficient regular maintenance. The second item can immediately affect a water heater's life span by causing it to work harder. Below we will cover some of the common water heater problems and fixes.

When you have no hot water whatsoever, then the first thing you should check is the thermostat. Try turning it slightly higher and find out if that makes a difference. If that does not help then the heating equipment, - it can be electric or gas- may have gone bad. If your water heater is gas powered, then the unit you need to check is called the thermocouple. These are quite easy to replace if you are DIY oriented, but if you do not know what you are doing, it is best to contact a service to solve the problem.

Not having adequate hot water is a water heater problem that is frequently seen in older water heaters. This is usually caused by a build up of sediment which practically makes the tank smaller and decreases the water capacity. To fix this issue, you should drain and flush the tank. If this does not solve the problem, you may have to change the dip tube. It directs cold water entering the tank towards the bottom of the tank, keeping it from mixing with already heated water. Because of normal wear and tear, the dip tube can break and slip cold water into the tank.

Odd noises that comes from the tank is another water heater problem which is seen often. This can be caused by a build up of sediment or a heating element simply burning out. The fix for this problem also needs draining and flushing the tank to remove the sediment and replacing the heating element.

Most water heater problems are rather simple and easy to be addressed if you are knowledgeable with repairing heating devices. Unless there is a serious problem like water heater leaking because of a corrosion in the tank, most of the time simple tools and a little know-how is all that is needed to handle these challenges.
