A Young Male Requires Treatment For His Intense Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Drug And Alcohol Addiction

Around three months ago I had breakfast with a forty-nine-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from extreme depression, has relationship issues, and who is dependent on drugs and alcohol. As stated by Benjamin, it is his drug and alcohol dependency and his intense depression that has had the most to do with his perpetual relationship difficulties.

As explained by Benjamin, he is so defeated by his relationship problems and by both of his medical conditions that he, for all intents and purposes, has no enthusiasm to complete much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish two semesters of grad school in Spanish history.

Benjamin's condition makes me question if he is an example of a person who can look within and perceive his drinking problems and chemical dependency and do something meaningful about these issues. Or, conversely, if he a person who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets alcohol and drug addiction treatment that leads to long lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how rehab would help his chemical dependency. For starters, there are quite a few recently discovered doctor-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse, help him through the alcohol and drug detox process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in counseling he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to understand the fact that there is absolutely nothing constructive about drug addiction and careless and hazardous drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the route to a premature death, poor work and school performance, financial difficulties, legal problems, deteriorating health, and shattered relationships. Fourth, treatment for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him cope with these psychological difficulties more successfully and perhaps create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in rehab he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Due to the fact that Benjamin lacks the determination to achieve much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he desperately needs some hope for a more fulfilling lifestyle. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he requires for his intense depression and addiction and stay with his treatment routine.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be dejected in life. He doesn't comprehend this right now but if he can learn how to stay away from drugs and alcohol through drug and alcohol therapy and get the counseling he requires for his intense depression, he can redirect his life and start living with direction, passion, and with self-respect.

More solid relationships, a wonderful life, self esteem, and affirmative change are certainly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to obtain the medical treatment he needs, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free manner, and learn how to cultivate a more positive attitude about his existence.
