A Nurse Practitioner Is Apprehensive About Her Dreadful Depression And Makes Up Her Mind To Quit Drinking
For the past eight years Carolyn has been a professional nurse at a community hospital. As a professional nurse, she plainly knew what to tell her patients about their health concerns but in her off-duty life, however, she definitely didn't practice what she preached. For example, she normally drank quite abusively, she made it a habit to stay away from exercising, she smoked at least a pack of cigarettes on a daily basis, and she was just about eighteen pounds overweight.
One day on her way to work, Carolyn got into a traffic accident. Because the accident was her fault and since her speech was jumbled when she talked, the arresting police officer gave her a breathalyzer test a breathalyzer test. As per standard police operating procedures, when an individual becomes involved in a traffic accident and does not pass a breath alcohol test, the individual has to spend at least eight hours in the county jail.
In fact, Carolyn should have known better than to drive after she was drinking because she recently attended an alcohol abuse awareness class at the hospital that focused on issues, statistics, and information about long term alcohol effects such as the following: binge drinking, DUIs, alcohol poisoning, and the essential differences between alcoholism and alcohol abuse.
Needless to say, Carolyn felt ashamed of her traffic accident. In addition she experienced more than a little shame about the fact that the accident was her fault. And perhaps worst of all she experienced quite a bit of shame about the fact that she was driving after she ingested a few drinks. As Carolyn thought about her circumstance, however, she saw how fortunate she was because down the road her drinking problems could have been a lot worse due to the long term effects of alcohol.
In any event, Carolyn's disgrace about her traffic accident encouraged her to review her life and make some relevant and beneficial changes. First, she was going to stop drinking in an irresponsible manner. This would certainly help her avoid long term alcohol abuse. Second, she was going to stop smoking. Third, she was going to go on a diet. And fourth, she was going to begin exercising.
As distraught and depressed as Carolyn was about the entire vehicle accident situation, she used this distressing experience as a catalyst for positive change. In addition, she used her painful experience as a real source of discovery that she had been overlooking her own health while she professionally told her patients how to live a more healthy life. After all had been said and done, she finally saw the hypocrisy in her behavior and decided that she would live her life as a constructive source of affirmation for her patients.
